Molecular evolution of the seed storage proteins of barley, rye and wheat   总被引:15,自引:0,他引:15  
The major storage proteins (prolamins) of barley, rye and wheat are characterized by the presence of two or more unrelated structural domains, one of which contains repeated sequences. Because of this repetitive structure and their restricted distribution (only in grasses), it has been suggested that the prolamins are of recent origin. Contrary to this hypothesis, we show that parts of the non-repetitive domain of one group of prolamins are homologous with sequences present in a large group of seed proteins from monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants; including Bowman-Birk protease inhibitors, cereal inhibitors of alpha-amylase and trypsin, and 2 S globulin storage proteins of castor bean and oil seed rape. This implies an ancient origin for these non-repetitive domains. The origins of the repetitive domains are not known but may lie within the grasses.  相似文献

Barbus bynni begins to mature at Age IV. Ripening of gonads of mature fish starts in May when water temperature approaches the annual maximum. However, the spawning season coincides with the onset of the flood season in July. These facts, as well as the cyclic growth of the gonads, show that B. bynni spawns once a year. Fecundity varies with size of fish and gonads. However, this levels off in the middle size group. At this age the fecundity was estimated to be 1 424 693 eggs.  相似文献

Basic knowledge on the feeding ecology of one of the common and commercially important fish species in Jebel Aulia Reservoir is provided.The structure of the feeding apparatus indicates that Labeo niloticus is a bottom feeder, depending on soft and decayed vegetation, organic debris and whatever small organisms found within. However, juveniles and fry are prone to explore all layers and depths of the river selectively for plankton. There is little evidence of seasonal selection of food. Changes in diet quality are governed by the availability of type of food. Variability of feeding activity is connected with climate and breeding season.  相似文献

Strains of Vibrio cholerae, both O1 and non-O1 serovars, were found to attach to the surfaces of live copepods maintained in natural water samples collected from the Chesapeake Bay and Bangladesh environs. The specificity of attachment of V. cholerae to live copepods was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, which revealed that the oral region and egg sac were the most heavily colonized areas of the copepods. In addition, survival of V. cholerae in water was extended in the presence of live copepods. Attachment of viable V. cholerae cells to copepods killed by exposure to -60 degrees C was not observed. Furthermore, survival of V. cholerae was not as long in the presence of dead copepods as in the live copepod system. A strain of Vibrio parahaemolyticus was also seen to attach to copepod surfaces without effect on survival of the organism in water. The attachment of vibrios to copepods was concluded to be significant since strains of other bacteria, including Pseudomonas sp. and Escherichia coli, did not adhere to live or dead copepods. Attachment of V. cholerae to live copepods is suggested to be an important factor of the ecology of this species in the aquatic environment, as well as in the epidemiology of cholera, for which V. cholerae serovar O1 is the causative agent.  相似文献

1. Evidence is presented that cyclic AMP inhibits the incorporation of l-[4,5-(3)H]leucine into protein in a cell-free system from rat liver. This inhibition occurs after aminoacyl-tRNA formation. 2. Microsomal fractions, isolated after the incubation of postmitochondrial supernatant with cyclic AMP and ATP, show a diminished ability to synthesize protein. Both cyclic AMP and ATP are required for this effect. 3. A possible physiological role for the anti-anabolic action of cyclic AMP is discussed in terms of the control of gluconeogenesis.  相似文献

Three groups of rats were fed two types of synthetic diets for 52 d. The—A group was allowed free access to a vitamin A-deficient diet and showed classical signs of vitamin A deficiency. The brain was the only organ in our experiment where no significant weight difference was present among the three groups. In the brain, calcium concentration was significantly higher in the—A group when compared with the PF (Pair-fed; allowed restricted amount of control diet) and +A groups (allowed free access to control diet). In the tibia, calcium and magnesium concentrations were significantly lower in the—A group when compared with other two groups. Excessive accumulation of calcium in brain and apparently similar unbalance in bone, mineral concentration were observed in central nervous system (CNS) degenerative diseases. Our results suggest that abnormal metabolism of calcium and magnesium in some tissues and excessive accumulation of calcium in brain may be responsible for the development of neurological disorders in vitamin A-deficient rats.  相似文献

The effect of NH 4 + on the regulation of NO 3 and NO 2 transport systems in roots of intact barley (Hordeum vulgareL.) seedlings grown in NO 3 or NO 2 was studied. Ammonium partially inhibited induction of both transport systems. The inhibition was less severe in NO 2 -fed than in NO 3 -fed seedlings, presumably due to lower uptake of NH 4 + in the presence of NO 2 . In seedlings pretreated with NH 4 + subsequent induction was inhibited only when NH 4 + was also present during induction, even though pretreated roots accumulated high levels of NH 4 + . This indicates that inhibition may be regulated by NH 4 + concentration in the cytoplasm rather than its total accumulation in roots. L-Methionine sulfoximine did not relieve the inhibition by NH 4 + , suggesting that inhibition is caused by NH 4 + itself rather than by its assimilation product(s). Ammonium inhibited subsequent expression of NO 3 transport activity similarly in roots grown in 0.1, 1.0, or 10 mM NO 3 for 24 h (steady-state phase) or 4 d (decline phase), indicating that it has a direct, rather than general feedback effect. Induction of the NO 3 transport system was about twice as sensitive to NH 4 + as compared to the NO 2 transport system. Nocturnal flying insects were collected monthly for 13 months using ultra violet light-traps set at various vertical levels in a weakly-seasonal, tropical lowland dipterocarp forest in Sarawak, Malaysia. Abundance, faunal composition, size distribution and guild structure of these samples were analyzed with respect to temperal and vertical distributions. The nocturnal flying insect community in the canopy level was highly dominated by fig wasps (84%) in individual number, and by scarabaeid beetles (28%) in weight. A principal component analysis on monthly catches detected non-random, seasonal trends of insect abundance. The first two principal trends were an alternation of wetter (September to January) and less wet seasons (February to August) and an alternation between the least wet (January to March) and the other seasons. Many insect groups were less abundant in the least wet season than the other seasons, whilst inverse patterns were found in Scarabaeidae and Tenebrionidae. Significantly positive and negative correlations between monthly catch and rainfall were detected only in ovule-feeders and in phloem-feeders, respectively. Delayed, significant negative correlations between monthly catch and 1–3 month preceding rainfall were more frequently detected in phytophages, phloem-feeders, seed-feeders, wood-borers and scavengers. The peak in abundance along vertical levels were found at the canopy level (35 m) for phloem-, ovule-, seed-, root-, fungal-feeders and nectar collectors, at an upper subcanopy level (25 m) for scavengers and aquatic predators, and at a middle subcanopy level (17 m) for ants. Catches at the emergent level (45 m) did not exceed those at the canopy level.  相似文献
